Why 72V Controllers Matter
The Controller Decides Whether Your 72V Battery Drives All Day — Or Dies On The First Hill.
72V is the workhorse voltage for the world's biggest light-EV segment — Indian e-rickshaw and e-loader builds — plus golf carts, electric forklifts and low-speed utility EVs everywhere. But 72V at 30A continuous is no joke: the controller has to manage regenerative braking spikes, lead-acid undervoltage protection and stop-and-go thermal cycling without nuisance tripping. The BLD6010 72V BLDC motor driver uses 200V+ MOSFETs for transient headroom, supports active regenerative braking, accepts standard e-rickshaw Hall throttles and golf cart foot-pedals on its 0–5V analog input, and exposes battery cut-off thresholds in firmware so the same controller works on lead-acid (6×12V) and 20S Li-ion packs. Designed in-house at the Cixi factory and supplied as a tested motor + controller kit for OEM e-mobility volume.

Typical Applications
Where 72V BLDC Motor Controllers Are Used
01
Indian e-rickshaw and e-loader (1000W–1500W)
72V is the de-facto standard for India's e-rickshaw and e-loader segment — the world's largest light-EV market by unit volume. The BLD6010 covers the 1000W–1500W differential-motor band, accepts standard 0–5V Hall throttles and protects 6×12V lead-acid packs with configurable undervoltage cut-off.
02
Golf carts and low-speed utility EVs
Standard 72V drivetrains on golf carts, NEVs (neighborhood electric vehicles) and resort utility carts. Active regenerative braking recovers 5–10% of range on courses with frequent stops; foot-pedal 0–5V input matches industry-standard accelerator hardware.
03
Electric forklifts and floor cleaners (2000W+)
Counterbalance and reach-truck forklifts use 72V drivetrains for traction and hydraulic pump drives. Floor scrubbers and warehouse sweepers run continuous-duty cycles where motor temperature input on the controller becomes important.
04
Heavy e-scooters and 72V motorcycles
Premium electric scooters and 72V electric motorcycles in the 1500–3000W class. Higher voltage means lower current at the same power, which means thinner cabling and smaller connectors than equivalent 48V builds.

How It Works
How A 72V BLDC Motor Controller Works (E-Rickshaw / Golf Cart Edition)
A 72V BLDC motor controller converts the 72V battery bus into a three-phase variable-frequency output for a brushless DC motor. Compared to a 24V or 36V controller, the signal path is identical in concept — but the higher voltage demands beefier MOSFETs, careful regenerative-braking handling and a battery undervoltage threshold tuned to the pack chemistry.
DC bus filtering at 72V: High-voltage electrolytic capacitors (100V+ rated) stabilize the 72V battery input — typically a 6×12V lead-acid pack on Indian e-rickshaw (~70V flat to ~84V fully charged) or a 20S Li-ion pack on premium e-mobility (~60V flat to ~84V fully charged). The capacitor bank also absorbs regenerative current from the motor during deceleration.
Six-MOSFET three-phase inverter (200V+ parts): Three half-bridges (six 200V or 250V MOSFETs) sequentially energize motor phases U, V and W. The high voltage rating gives ample margin over the 84V peak bus and absorbs regenerative spikes during deceleration without breakdown — critical for golf cart downhill regen and e-rickshaw stop-and-go cycles.
Hall-sensor commutation with regenerative support: Three Hall sensors inside the motor read rotor position; the MCU determines which phase pair to energize next. Beyond standard motoring commutation, the firmware also runs a regenerative-braking mode: when motor back-EMF exceeds bus voltage during deceleration, the inverter actively rectifies current back into the battery pack — extending range 5–10% on golf carts with frequent stops.
Throttle and PID closed-loop: Hall pulses provide rotor speed. A PID controller compares actual speed against the throttle setpoint (0–5V Hall thumb / twist throttle on e-rickshaw, 0–5V foot-pedal potentiometer on golf carts and forklifts, RS485 from a fleet computer) and adjusts duty cycle every cycle.
Battery and motor protection: Overcurrent (>50A), overvoltage (>90V — guards against regen overvoltage on a fully charged pack), undervoltage (configurable per pack — 60V for 6×12V lead-acid to prevent deep-discharge damage; programmable for 20S Li-ion) and short-circuit detection trigger gate shutoff within microseconds.

What 72V motors can this controller drive? The BLD6010 works with 72V brushless DC motors from 1000W to 2000W continuous (3000W peak) — 120BL and 130BL frames, e-rickshaw differential motors, golf cart traction motors and 72V hub motors. Supports 2, 4 and 5 pole-pair motors with Hall-sensor commutation.
Is this controller suitable for an Indian e-rickshaw build? Yes — this is one of its primary applications. 72V (6×12V lead-acid) is the standard e-rickshaw battery configuration. The BLD6010 covers the 1000W–1500W differential motor band, accepts a 0–5V Hall throttle directly, supports brake-resistor regenerative braking for lead-acid and protects the pack from deep-discharge damage with configurable undervoltage cut-off.
Does the controller support regenerative braking? Yes. On Li-ion builds, when motor back-EMF exceeds bus voltage during deceleration the controller actively rectifies current back into the battery pack — typically 5–10% range extension on golf carts. Lead-acid packs cannot accept regen current; for those, a brake-resistor configuration dissipates the energy as heat instead.
Can the same controller run 96V or 110V motors? Yes. The BLD6010 has a DC 80–220V input range — same hardware drives 72V, 96V and 110V industrial systems. For 110V industrial spindles, the same controller runs at higher bus voltage with proportionally lower current at the same power level.
Can I get a 72V motor and controller as a tested kit? Yes. Shenghe supplies matched motor + controller kits with pole-pair count, Hall sequence, current rating and battery cut-off pre-configured. Kits ship pre-wired with Hall and throttle pigtails — eliminates parameter mismatch on the production line and shortens e-rickshaw / golf cart / forklift commissioning.
