How A 36V BLDC Motor Controller Works

A 36V BLDC motor controller converts the 36V battery bus into a three-phase variable-frequency output for a brushless DC motor. The signal path is identical in concept to a 48V or 72V controller — only the MOSFET voltage class and the battery protection thresholds change.

  1. DC bus filtering at 36V: Bulk electrolytic capacitors stabilize the 36V battery input (10S Li-ion sits at ~30V flat to ~42V fully charged) and absorb regenerative current returned by the motor when the throttle releases or during downhill braking.
  2. Six-MOSFET three-phase inverter: Three half-bridges (six 60V-rated MOSFETs) sequentially energize motor phases U, V and W. 60V parts give comfortable margin over the 42V peak bus voltage and absorb regenerative spikes during deceleration without breakdown.
  3. Hall-sensor (or sensorless) commutation: Three Hall sensors inside the motor read rotor position; the MCU determines which phase pair to energize next, producing trapezoidal drive waveforms. Sensorless variants detect position from back-EMF — common in light e-scooters and tool batteries where Hall wiring is hard to seal.
  4. Throttle and PID closed-loop: Hall pulses also provide rotor speed. A PID controller compares actual speed against the throttle setpoint (0–5V Hall thumb / twist throttle, 0–100% PWM, RS485 command) and adjusts duty cycle every cycle.
  5. Battery and motor protection: Overcurrent (>50A), overvoltage (>55V — guards against regen overvoltage), undervoltage (<18V — prevents Li-ion over-discharge below pack cut-off) and short-circuit detection trigger gate shutoff within microseconds.
