Gear Motor Manufacturer FAQ
What Procurement Teams Ask Before The First Gear-Motor PO.
The 12 questions procurement teams ask most often before placing the first gear-motor order. For sourcing-specific questions not covered here, send the inline RFQ — the export desk replies inside one working day.
Are you a manufacturer or a trading company?
Direct manufacturer. Gearbox CNC, gear hobbing, motor winding, gearbox + motor assembly, grease pack, controller PCB and dyno bench all on the same site in Cixi, Ningbo. Procurement teams who visit can audit any station and request a gearbox teardown on the bench — no trading-company markup between the price you see and the line that built the gear motor.
Which gearbox families do you make in-house?
Four families: planetary (3:1–500:1, low backlash), worm (5:1–60:1 single-stage, self-locking), helical / spur HG-series (3:1–1000:1, high efficiency), right-angle bevel-helical hybrid (90° output). All housings, output shafts, gears and worm wheels CNC-machined or hobbed in-house — not subcontracted.
What gear material and AGMA quality?
20CrMnTi case-hardened steel HRC 58–62 (planetary, helical, spur), 40Cr ground worm shaft + tin-bronze ZCuSn10P1 worm wheel. AGMA Q9–Q11 standard; Q12 (DIN 6) ground gears on request for low-noise / precision-positioning. Backlash 10–20 arc-min single-stage planetary standard, <5 arc-min ground-gear precision available.
What lubrication and IP rating do you ship?
Lithium-complex grease NLGI grade 2 (planetary / helical), gear oil ISO VG 220 EP additive (worm), sealed-for-life. IP54 standard (double-lip oil seal + housing O-ring). IP65 with confirmed gasket on request, IP67 quoted per project. Food-grade NSF H1 lubricant on request.
What is the smallest order you accept?
1 unit for sample on stock SKUs. 100 units production for stock, 50–100 OEM-branded, 200–500 ODM with new tooling. Wholesale tier pricing kicks in at 100 / 500 / 1,000 / 5,000+ units — see /bldc-motor-wholesale/ for the volume tier structure.
Lead time for custom ratio or output shaft?
Stock ratio: 2–3w production / 7–10d sample. Custom ratio on existing gear blanks: +1–2w. Custom output shaft (length, keyway, flange, hollow-shaft): +2–3w. New gearbox tooling: +4–8w for prototype, FAI, tooling.
Do you do OEM and ODM on gear motors?
Yes. OEM: customer brand on housing and motor body, custom packaging, custom paint within range. ODM: custom ratio, custom output shaft, custom housing, custom IP rating, custom motor winding, custom encoder integration. NDAs supported on first inquiry. ODM tooling refunded against volume over agreed quantity.
How do you verify output torque and ratio?
Every gear motor receives an end-of-line dynamometer test — output rated torque, peak torque, no-load output speed (verifying ratio), no-load motor-side current, temperature rise, audible noise, planetary backlash where applicable. Test record sticker on the unit; lot record on file.
What payment terms — T/T, L/C, Incoterms?
T/T 30% deposit + 70% balance against B/L copy. L/C at sight on orders ≥ USD 30k. PayPal for samples < USD 1k. Incoterms: EXW Cixi, FOB Ningbo, CIF / CFR / DDP supported. Volume tier discount applies — see /bldc-motor-wholesale/.
How do you handle quality complaints on gear motors?
Per-unit dyno test record. Failed unit returned with the test sticker triggers root-cause inside 7 working days; replacement seal / grease in stock; written 8D report on systemic batch issues. Common modes: oil-seal leak (5-min field replacement), gear noise from tooling drift, planet-carrier bearing wear from over-speed, worm-wheel pitting from thermal overload.
Can I visit the gear motor factory?
Yes — open for buyer visits and live video walk-through. Ningbo Lishe (NGB) ~1h, Shanghai Pudong (PVG) ~3h. Gearbox teardown on the bench available for visiting buyers or via live WhatsApp / WeChat video on request.
Can you ship gear motors to my country?
Yes — Ningbo Beilun is a top-three container port, direct sailings worldwide. HS Code 8501 (motor with gearbox) clears under standard motor classification. Container loading runs 60–70% of bare-motor density given gearbox housing volume.
