What is the difference between a BLDC motor and a brushed DC motor?

A brushed DC motor uses carbon brushes and a mechanical commutator to switch current in the rotor windings. A BLDC motor moves commutation outside the motor — into an electronic controller. The result is higher efficiency (85–92% vs 70–80%), no brush dust, longer service life (typically 20,000+ hours vs 2,000–5,000), lower acoustic noise and easier closed-loop speed and torque control.

What is the difference between BLDC and PMSM?

Both use permanent magnets on the rotor. BLDC has trapezoidal back-EMF and is driven by 6-step (block) commutation — simpler controller, slight low-speed cogging. PMSM has sinusoidal back-EMF and is driven by FOC (field-oriented control) — smoother low-speed torque, higher controller cost. Do BLDC motors come with a matched controller?

Can I order a BLDC motor with a gearbox?

Yes. Three gearbox families are available on every standard BLDC frame: planetary (high torque density, low backlash, suited to robotics and AGV), worm (right-angle output, self-locking, suited to lifts and automatic doors) and inline spur (low cost, suited to conveyor and packaging). Ratios from 3:1 up to 1000:1 cover output speeds from a few RPM to several hundred RPM.
