DC Gear Motor FAQ
What Procurement Teams And Engineers Ask Before The First PO.
The 12 questions buyers ask most often when sourcing DC gear motors. For application-specific questions not covered here, send the inline RFQ — export desk replies inside 1 working day on standard inquiries.
What is a DC gear motor?
A DC motor (brushless or brushed) with a gearbox bolted to the output shaft. Trades motor shaft speed for output torque at a fixed reduction ratio. Runs on DC power (battery / DC bus) rather than AC mains.
DC vs AC gear motor — which to use?
DC for battery / mobile / variable-speed / microcontroller-driven applications below 10kW. AC for mains-powered fixed-speed industrial duty above 5kW where simple induction + starter wins on cost. See decision table above.
BLDC vs brushed DC — which fits?
BLDC for continuous duty (20,000+ hours, 85–92% efficient, no brush dust, ~30–60% premium). Brushed DC for intermittent / cost-sensitive (2,000–5,000 hours, 70–80% efficient, lower upfront cost). Breakeven around 2,000h/year operation.
Voltage and power range covered?
12V / 24V / 36V / 48V / 60V / 72V / 110V DC standard. 220V DC on selected high-power frames. 50W to 10kW standard. Custom voltage tap on existing winding available; voltages outside this range run as ODM.
Gearbox families offered?
4 families in-house: planetary (3:1–500:1, low backlash), worm (5:1–60:1 single-stage, self-locking), helical-spur (3:1–1000:1, high efficiency), right-angle (90° output). All share the same 20CrMnTi gear material and AGMA Q9–Q11 grade.
Gear material and AGMA quality?
20CrMnTi case-hardened steel HRC 58–62 (planetary / helical / spur), 40Cr Q&T ground worm + ZCuSn10P1 tin-bronze worm wheel. AGMA Q9–Q11 standard, Q12 (DIN 6) ground gears on request. Backlash 10–20 arc-min single-stage planetary; <5 arc-min ground-gear precision.
Lubrication and IP rating?
Lithium-complex grease NLGI grade 2 (planetary / helical), gear oil ISO VG 220 EP additive (worm), sealed-for-life. IP54 standard with double-lip oil seal + housing O-ring. IP65 with confirmed gasket on request, IP67 quoted per project. Food-grade NSF H1 lubricant on request.
Lead time and MOQ?
Stock sample: 1 unit, 7–10 days. Stock production: 100 units, 2–3 weeks. OEM 50–100u, 4–6w. Custom 100–300u, 6–8w. ODM 200–500u, 12–20w. Wholesale tier pricing from 100 units; see /bldc-motor-wholesale/.
Matched motor + controller kits?
Yes — BLDC variants ship with matched controller (BLD22010 / BLD6010 / BLDB6010) pre-paired and dyno-tested. Firmware parameterised against motor electrical spec + gear ratio at end-of-line. Brushed DC runs on DC voltage directly, optional PWM controller available.
Manufacturer or trader?
Direct manufacturer. Gearbox CNC + gear hobbing + heat treatment QA + stator winding + motor+gearbox final assembly + grease pack + controller PCB SMT + dyno bench all on one site in Cixi, Ningbo. See /dc-gear-motor-manufacturer/ and /gear-motor-manufacturer/.
Payment terms and Incoterms?
T/T 30/70 standard, L/C at sight ≥ USD 30k, PayPal samples. Tooling milestones for ODM. Incoterms: EXW Cixi, FOB Ningbo, CIF / CFR / DAP / DDP supported. 20 min from Ningbo-Zhoushan port.
Country shipping and HS Code?
Ships worldwide. HS Code 8501 (motor with gearbox) clears under standard motor classification. Container loading 60–70% of bare-motor density given gearbox housing volume. Sea-freight transit US LA 14–18d, EU Hamburg 30–35d, India Mumbai 12–15d.
